Fast-breaking Banana News

From our friends at Coastal Television Network

Diana’s Bananas has many loyal fans out there, and some even produce their own videos to help spread the word. The following video was sent to us recently by the good people at Coastal Television Network in Fresno, California. Enjoy!

How serendipitous discovery combined with out-of-the- box thinking has made Diana’s Bananas a “world’s best” business.

A funny thing happened while Bob Carmody was helping out at his family’s booth at the 1984 Taste of Chicago food festival. His father-in-law, a successful candy retailer who was selling chocolate-covered strawberries, casually picked up a banana brought in as a snack by one of the crew and stuck it into the dry ice they were using to keep the berries cool—just to see what would happen. When it froze solid, he dipped it into the melted chocolate. The chocolate froze, too, and at that point he gave it a try. He called his daughter and business partner Jeanine over for a taste. And they both knew that they had stumbled onto something special. Jeanine immediately sent Bob out to the supermarket to buy bananas, and they quickly became a hit. Over the next few days, Bob became a familiar sight on his banana runs, and, by the time the Taste ended ten days later, 25,000 of the frozen chocolate-dipped treats had been sold!

Bob and Jeanine turned Diana’s Bananas into a hobby business, selling them at street fairs during the summer. One day, a family of fans approached them with a cooler, explaining that they wanted to take a bunch home for the kids to enjoy during the week. “You know,” the dad said, “if these were available at the supermarket, I would definitely buy them.” Bob and Jeanine looked at each other and hatched a plan.  To Whom It May Concern:

These tasty treats have many health benefits for our residents here at First to Care. A great deal of our residents are on a water pill called Lasix. This also requires that they eat Potassium in their diets to replace what they lose in extra urine production from the Lasix. In addition, they are usually prescribed a Potassium pill to go with their Lasix. This is an important electrolyte that needs replaced when lost when there is  a lot of urine production (as with Lasix). Some people simply can’t swallow Potassium tabs due their large size. The resident’s physicians encourage the bananas if they can’t take the Potassium pills (we have several residents in that situation).

Our facility gives at least 7 bananas per resident a week. It’s their daily snack they look forward to everyday. Some people just don’t like to eat the bananas, but because they are lightly covered in chocolate, it makes those who don’t like them, love them.  The dark chocolate is especially good because dark chocolate also provides antioxidants. Dark Chocolate May Lower Risk Of Heart Attacks, Strokes.

Dark Chocolate May Lower Risk Of Heart Attacks, Strokes.

Bloomberg News (3/31, Cortez) reports that, according to a study published March 31 in the European Heart Journal, “a daily nibble of dark chocolate may slash the risk of heart attacks and strokes by more than one-third.” In “a study of 20,000 middle-aged” people, investigators from the German Institute of Human Nutrition “tracked participants for a decade to unravel the ties between chocolate and heart disease, and unexpectedly found the biggest benefit lay in warding off strokes.”

The researchers “found people who had an average of six grams of chocolate per day — or about one square of a chocolate bar — had a 39 percent lower risk of either a heart attack or stroke,” the AP (3/31, Cheng) reports. “Experts think the flavonols contained in chocolate are responsible.”

According to WebMD (3/30, Warner), “people who ate the most chocolate also had blood pressure that was about one point systolic” and “0.9 point diastolic…lower than people who ate the least amount of chocolate.”

Just can’t stop eating them! Anybody have a good sustainable program for Brandy?

I need a 12-step program for Banana Babies addiction. I can’t stop eating them. I’ve always “liked” frozen bananas, but yours are different, you guys know that already. I had 2 banana babies for dinner tonight. And, one for lunch. Ok, I had one in between, too. That’s right, I’ve eaten nothing but banana babies today. I’ve already set my alarm for 10 minutes earlier than normal so that I have time to stop by Publix in the morning for more before work. Thank you, Diana’s Bananas, for giving me something healthy to obsess over. I haven’t obsessed like this since the Great Potato Skin Addiction of ’06. Thankfully, your bananas aren’t going to make me gain 15 pounds and increase my cholesterol levels. I appreciate that. Your biggest fan, Brandy

We say “Good For You”, never expected this great news! from Nancy in Hannacroix, NY

This came to us thru the “Contact Us” part of our website.  What a great surprise.

“I wanted to let you know that I LOVE the dark chocolate covered banana’s. I have been averaging 5 bananas a day. I’ve never been known for my moderation! I convinced myself that it is a health food because it is a real banana, and dark chocolate has antioxidants. Seriously, I have suffered from migraine headaches for years. I know they say chocolate is not good for migraines, but my migraines have been better since I have been eating these. It could just be a huge coinsidence, but I think the large amount of potassium have impacted things.
Hope you continue to make these forever!!
Thanks…”
